Your support gave Rob his second chance at life
When Rob’s kidney function began to fail in his early 50s, he faced years of dialysis. Long nights connected to machines, days marked by fatigue. He was sustained by the hope that one day, he might receive a lifesaving transplant.
That call came in the early hours of 2022. A donor kidney was waiting at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
“I’m not an emotional person, but I just sat on the bed and cried,” he recalls. Moments later, he ordered an Uber and made his way to the RMH, knowing his life was about to change.
Recovery demanded courage, but Rob never walked it alone.
“None of it would have been possible without the RMH staff,” he said. “From the months before surgery to the team on the ward…it was their empathy, their genuine care. They weren’t just doing a job. They were wonderful people.”
The RMH Kidney Transplantation Service is one of the largest in the country, performing more than 100 transplants a year - delivering expert care before, during and after surgery.
In honour of his anonymous donor and the care he received, Rob made a promise: to live with gratitude. On his first transplant anniversary, he completed a marathon. The next year, he climbed a sacred mountain in China.
