Healthcare is rapidly changing, and new breakthroughs are made every day. It is through the generous support of our community that the Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) remains at the forefront of healthcare delivery.

An extraordinary example of world-leading innovation at the RMH is our Mobile Stroke Unit (MSU) – the first and only of its kind in Australia.

The MSU is a purpose-built ambulance with an onboard CT scanner capable of imaging a patient’s brain to detect the type of stroke they are having. The MSU is staffed by a multidisciplinary team, who can assess the patient’s condition and begin treatment immediately, before even arriving at hospital.

Stroke survivors like Greg understand that with a stroke, every minute counts.

One moment, Greg was in the shower thinking about an opera he was about to conduct. The next, he was staggering to the bed, slurring his speech and unable to move half his body.

Just 12 minutes later, the RMH MSU arrived. The fast response minimised the amount of irreversible brain damage. Without it, Greg says he would have been much worse.

“I count my blessings that there is such a thing as a stroke ambulance. They were here very fast and started working on me immediately. The thing that has helped me the most? Aside from my dear wife and family, it’s been the Royal Melbourne Hospital from top to bottom. I really mean it. Everyone I speak to says the same. Where would we be? Where would we be…”

By purchasing a ticket in the Home Lottery, you can be proud that your support will ensure the RMH is always there when it matters most – for you and your loved ones.
